Michelle Ryan returned to Walford this summer, appearing as though she had never left it. Twenty years is a long time to avoid a square that isn’t even real. Zoe Slater, the character she plays, left for Ibiza in 2005 with a credit card’s worth of poor choices behind her. She has returned home with a lot more. It’s important to keep in mind what initially made Zoe important. She wasn’t just another adolescent messing around in someone’s kitchen.
One of the most depressing and talked-about storylines in British soap operas was the gradual revelation that her “sister” Kat was actually her mother, conceived through an act of abuse by an uncle named Harry. Nineteen million people watched the two-hander episode that revealed that secret, and it went on to win Best Single Episode at the British Soap Awards. That is a significant footnote. Twenty years later, people still bring up that type of television at parties, half-joking, half-still-shaken.

Thus, longtime viewers knew right away that something was wrong when Zoe reappeared in June, pinching Kat’s credit card and appearing, by all accounts, worse for wear. Characters in soap operas typically don’t return to a quiet life; instead, they follow a predetermined script. They come back because the show needs them to drag that mess back through the front door after something went horribly wrong. It turned out that Zoe’s version of that mess included running away from Spain, a tale about loan sharks, and a stepfather named Alfie Moon who greeted her with a simple “Hello Zoe” as if two decades had never happened.
Given everything beneath it, the restraint of that line has an almost theatrical quality. Alfie, played by Shane Richie, has always had a talent for downplaying significant events, and this time it worked. The drums struck. On social media, the audience yelled. And the character himself simply said hello, as if he had realized that it is never a good idea to overreact to a Slater.
After watching the clips and reading the fan comments, I was struck by how quickly the audience divided into two groups. One person posted, “ZOE BLOODY SLATER”, using capital letters to convey an emotion that punctuation was unable to convey. This group was simply ecstatic, the kind of unadulterated happiness that doesn’t get faked online. The other group, a little more weary of the world, bemoaned the fact that the surprise had already leaked weeks earlier, depriving them of the real-time shock that everyone else appeared to be experiencing. It’s a very contemporary soap opera issue. A secret is what the show wants. By its very nature, the internet finds it difficult to maintain one.
The timing of everything behind the cameras wasn’t as coincidental as it might appear. According to Ryan, the decision was made because a new executive producer who was clearly a huge fan of the Slater family had been advocating for Zoe’s comeback at the same time that Ryan began reestablishing contact with former cast members and realizing that there was still genuine affection for the character through her own return to Instagram. The two sides of the equation lined up when she said, “It just so happened that at the same time”. A common expression in entertainment is that everything happens for a reason. Normally, I would be dubious of this. There are times when a script truly comes at the perfect time, and she seemed to be quickly persuaded after reading it.
Given how obvious Ryan’s return to EastEnders has been, it would be simple to assume he never truly left the business. It would be incorrect to assume that. Frustrated by what she described as the monotony of soap opera life, Ryan left in search of something different after Zoe left in 2005. He eventually landed the lead role in NBC’s Bionic Woman reboot. The show was short-lived. Strangely enough, she went on to play a number of British genre roles, including the supernatural drama Jekyll, a Doctor Who special opposite David Tennant, and Merlin, where she portrayed the sorceress Nimueh. Together, they created a career that was completely different from the one she had left behind, even though none of it carried the cultural weight of EastEnders.
Ryan avoided the platforms that most actors use to stay visible and remained virtually out of the spotlight for the majority of that time. She once described the EastEnders chapter as “an apprenticeship” to an interviewer, which at the time sounded like someone permanently closing a door. Observing her now, back among the Slaters, begs the obvious question: what changed, and is this merely a lengthy visit or a reopening of the door?
The new Zoe on screen is not the adolescent who departed. Ryan herself has described her as having “her defences up” and dealing with issues that she would prefer not to discuss with family members who haven’t seen her in years. Only the upcoming episodes will determine whether that is a plausible development of the character or just an easy way to create new drama. Returning characters are a common way for soap operas to test viewers’ patience before rewarding them. Zoe Slater’s second act has at least earned the benefit of the doubt, according to early indications.
