How Meghan Trainor Lost Weight Without Losing Herself

Meghan Trainor

A version of this story that frequently appears in celebrity media includes the trainer’s name being dropped like a brand deal, the dramatic number on a scale the before-and-after reveal. To be honest, Meghan Trainor’s weight loss journey doesn’t exactly fit that template, which is why it’s worth considering.

In recent years, Trainor, the Grammy-winning musician who literally built her early career on body positivity anthems, has talked candidly about changing her focus from appearance to function. Following the birth of her twins Rhys and Kai in 2023 and son Riley in 2021, she has expressed a sincere wish to feel stronger rather than smaller. Compared to most celebrity health stories, this distinction is more significant.

The timeline is noteworthy. After a few months, Trainor didn’t reappear, claiming a cleanse and appearing entirely different. The changes have been gradual and are primarily apparent in unscripted moments as opposed to staged photo ops.

There’s a feeling that the process has been shaped by postpartum recuperation, complicated by the kind of fatigue that comes with raising several young children at once disrupted by newborn schedules. Anyone who has experienced that knows how much willpower it takes to simply drink enough water.

According to what she has publicly disclosed, movement has been crucial not punishing exercises meant to make her smaller, but regular activity that she claims has helped her feel like herself once more. Interviews have mentioned walking, less strenuous resistance training a more regimented eating schedule. No drastic diets of elimination. No exercise program that sounds like it belongs in a Navy SEAL documentary. It’s possible that her strategy’s simplicity is precisely what has made it successful.

The timing of this discussion within a larger cultural context is difficult to ignore. Once praised for defying diet culture, women are now scrutinized for their weight loss as though there is only one acceptable stance.

Trainor has handled this more deftly than the conversation most likely merits. She hasn’t presented her decisions as a reversal of her prior beliefs. Health at age 21 differs from health after two pregnancies in a two-year period. Even though it ought to be clear, it still needs to be stated.

More than any particular technique, she has talked about a mental shift away from the anxiety that surrounded her body and food for a large portion of her early career and toward something more subdued and long-lasting.

This type of internal reframe is frequently what separates long-lasting change from the cycle of loss and regain that afflicts so many people who approach health primarily through restriction and shame, according to trauma psychologists and wellness researchers. The metaphor of the manicure as a stress reliever seems strangely applicable in this situation, where small, intentional acts of self-care eventually add up to something greater.

As this story develops, it’s still unclear if Trainor will become a vocal supporter of wellness or if she will keep her process largely under wraps. She has always been open and honest, sometimes to the point of disarming.

There is another version of her that appears to recognize the distinction between feeding a machine that turns women’s bodies into content and sharing in an authentic way. It remains to be seen if she continues to walk that line. For the time being, what she has modeled is something truly beneficial that a body can alter for reasons unrelated to esthetics the most truthful account of a health journey rarely fits neatly into a headline.
