Seeing the most well-known waterway in central London go silent is a subtly remarkable experience. No rowers, no ferries no tour boats. A few hundred swimsuits are traveling downstream through a city that has turned over its river to them for a few hours, but the Port of London Authority is enforcing a closure from Brentford to Fulham.
Swim London will take place on Sunday, September 6, 2026. There are two distance options: a 5-kilometer start in Barnes and a 10-kilometer start at Brentford. Both conclude at Putney Embankment, where an event village featuring food, music prize distribution is set up by the organizer. The official name of the event, the Swim London 10K: Lords and Commons Cup, has a hint of Victorian ceremony, but the event itself feels much more modern.
In this case, the route is more important than the distance. Because both swims are tide-assisted, swimsuits pass Kew Gardens, Chiswick, Hammersmith Bridge the Craven Cottage stretch on their way to Putney while traveling downstream with the incoming current at their backs. The tide is a powerful force.
Anyone following along the Thames Path must maintain a fast walking pace in order to stay level because swimsuits move so quickly. The 5km permits two hours, while the 10km has a four-hour cut-off. These are reasonable goals for skilled open-water swimsuits, especially since the river is assisting. The organizer makes it apparent that this is not a day out for beginners. The Thames is dynamic, tidal demands real open-water experience.
Anyone who is at least eighteen years old may enter. A tow float is required. Wetsuits are optional, but swimming without one is still allowed if the water temperature is higher than 16°C on the day. The athlete pack will provide final instructions closer to the event.
Each swimmer receives a finisher’s medal, a Swim London cap a timing chip. The entrance fee is £130 for the 5km and £150 for the 10km. Purchases can be withdrawn for a complete refund within 14 days of purchase; after that, they are non-refundable but transferable until the specified deadline.
The debate over whether or not the Thames is actually becoming swimmable again serves as the backdrop for all of this. Toby Robinson, who competed for Britain in the 10-kilometer marathon at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, founded Swim London. Prior to that, he protested sewage discharges by taking part in a Surfers Against Sewage relay down the Thames.
It is anticipated that approximately 95% of sewage overflows into the tidal river will be reduced by the completion of the Thames Tideway Tunnel in February 2025. In the run-up to the event, the organizers provide participants with updates on water quality; if conditions are unsuitable on the day, they will take appropriate action. Events like this appear to be a part of the process, though it’s still unclear how quickly public trust in the water catches up with the engineering reality.
The end point is not chosen at random. The legal limit for swimming in the tidal Thames is marked by Putney Bridge. The current flows at about five miles per hour beneath it. The route ends there because swimming is no longer permitted there.
The organizers’ own advice should be taken seriously by those who are thinking about competing: this event is only for competent open-water swimsuits.
