12ft Pool How Many Litres: Everything Buyers Get Wrong Before Purchasing

Ft Pool How Many Litres Everything Buyers Get Wrong Before Purchasing

After filling a brand-new 12-foot garden pool with a regular garden hose for about three hours, the reality of 6,473 liters starts to set in. It’s not a number you think about when you’re scrolling through garden centre websites in May, watching slow-motion footage of kids laughing in sun-dappled water. It’s actually a number that matters a great deal.

A 12ft round above-ground pool, filled to the recommended 90 percent level, holds somewhere between 6,473 and 6,503 litres depending on the model. The Bestway Steel Pro and the Intex Prism Frame arguably the two most commonly purchased 12ft pools in the UK both sit right in that range. It is about the same as sixty-five bathtubs. You should anticipate having to wait the better part of a day for someone to enter if your water pressure is average.

It’s interesting to note how infrequently that figure is used in marketing. The diameter, color, corrosion-resistant frame, and triple-layer walls are always the highlights. Almost as an afterthought, the liters are tucked away in the specification table. Most likely because 6,500 liters seems like a lot. Because it is a lot.

The chemistry side of things follows from that number directly. Keeping 6,473 litres safe for swimming isn’t complicated, but it does require consistency. pH needs to stay between 7.2 and 7.6. Weekly testing is required for chlorine levels. To prevent the water from turning, the filter pump, which typically circulates between 1,060 and 1,798 liters per hour on 12-foot pool sets, must run for six to eight hours every day. In cooler weather, you can get away with skipping a few days. Less likely during a typical July heatwave, when the temptation to add more chemicals instead of running the pump tends to backfire and algae blooms quickly.

It is worthwhile to read the complete customer reviews of the Bestway Steel Pro, not just the star ratings. A pattern exists. The majority of buyers are genuinely happy because it was simple to install, kids adore it, and it was reasonably priced. But a recurring theme is that the included filter pump struggles. Many owners claim that despite chemical treatment, the water isn’t staying clean, so they have to empty and replenish the pool every few days.

That’s almost always a filtration problem rather than a chemistry problem the filter that ships with the pool is functional, but it’s sized to the minimum acceptable specification for that volume of water. Upgrading to the next capacity pump makes a noticeable difference.

There’s a sense, watching the above-ground pool market develop over the past few years, that the category has matured considerably. The frames are better. The liners are actually more resistant to punctures than they were ten years ago. For example, Bestway’s Tritech liner claims to be 83 percent more resistant to punctures than regular PVC, which may sound like marketing speak until you handle the material. The setup guidelines are now better.

It’s still possible to buy a pool online and receive one with manufacturing defects punctures along fold lines, filter housing that leaks and the logistics of returning a 20kg item that you’ve partially assembled are genuinely painful. Purchasing from a store with a simple return policy or, if feasible, doing an in-person inspection are still wise choices.

For anyone considering heating, the litre figure is also important. For a 12-foot pool in the UK, a 3.5kW pool heater is typically thought to be the right size to raise and maintain the temperature for typical summer use. Surprisingly, an uncovered 6,500-liter pool on a warm day can lose a significant amount of water to evaporation, which also upsets the chemical balance. Solar covers help retain overnight heat and reduce evaporation.

Whether the typical UK buyer understands what they’re getting into when they click “purchase” on a 12-foot pool is still up for debate. the duration of filling. The daily skimming. the chemistry checks every two weeks. It requires two workers and a Saturday morning to drain, disassemble, and store during the off-season. It’s all real, but none of it is particularly challenging. The good news is that the routine becomes second nature after you’ve used one for a season. On a warm afternoon, with a well-kept 6,473-liter pool, a sturdy ladder, and clear water, it’s difficult not to believe that the effort is worthwhile.
